GENERAL INFORMATION
Propane Usage

When you arrive, be sure to turn the valve on the propane tank all the way on to seat the valve and prevent leakage.

To use the propane stove: hold a lit match to the burner and turn the gas on. Control the flame with the individual burner controls.

To use the propane lights: push the lever in and then up while holding a lit match to the mantle. Do not touch the mantle or it will break. When turning the light off, be sure the lever pops out and no gas is coming out. In the event of an emergency, turn the valve on the propane tank all the way off.

When you leave, be sure to turn the valve on the propane tank all the way off.

If you changed/switched propane tanks, please leave a note about it in the cabin or with the park ranger, or let the GPA or BLM know, so we know to refill the empty tank.

Drinking Water

Available at two locations. One spigot is located at the east end of town, by the Hebner Cabin. The other is located in front of Kelly’s Saloon.

To use the spigot, lift the handle all the way up, and allow a minute or so for the water to come out. No pumping is necessary.

Be sure to close the handle completely to prevent freezing.

Toilets

Available at two locations. One toilet is located on the east end of town below the Hebner cabin. The other is located right behind the McDonald cabin.

Wood Stoves

Please split your firewood at the wood pile.

The stove is equipped with a catalytic combustor which requires the following procedure in starting the unit from a cold start.

Caution: Never light or rekindle a fire with kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel or charcoal lighter. Always open the by-pass damper before opening the door.

1. Place several wads of crushed paper evenly over the entire bottom of the firebox.

2. Lay small dry sticks of kindling on top of paper.

3. Open both the slide draft control located under the ash apron and the bypass damper located on the right side of the unit. Open both by pulling out on the spring handle.

4. Make sure that no matches or other combustibles are in the immediate area of the stove. Be sure the room is adequately ventilated and the flue unobstructed.

5. Ignite the paper. Leave the door cracked open until the fire is burning freely and the kindling is well caught.

6. Once the kindling is burning freely, add several pieces of split dry wood on the fire and allow the wood to catch well prior to closing the door completely.

7. Close the door and the bypass damper and allow the unit to burn freely for 45 minutes to an hour.

8. Once you have established a hot bed of coals, open the bypass damper, add additional wood (fill the unit), close the door and allow the fire to burn freely for 30 minutes.

9. Close the by-pass damper and set the slide draft control to the desired setting.

Note: Pulling the side control toward you opens the draft to the firebox allowing the fire to burn hotter. Pushing the side control toward the rear of the unit closes the draft to the firebox causing the fire to burn slower.

Please, before you leave:

Sweep the floor and front porch; wipe down windowsills, counter tops, etc.

Fill the wood box inside from the woodpile, including a generous supply of kindling.

Pack out all trash.

Pour out any extra water and turn water containers upside down.

Wash and stack dishes upside down in cupboards.

Be sure the fire is safe. Close the draft on the stove.

Make sure to turn the valve on the propane tank all the way off.

Check for personal belongings.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your stay and thank you for your cooperation!
