OLE'S TAVERN
Visitor Center Once a Lively Saloon
"Not so long ago, you might have entered today's visitor center and found a jovial Ole and Marion Dahl waiting to serve you. The couple built Ole's Tavern in 1938 and kept the doors open through the early 1960s. Locals affectionately called their favorite hangout "the Joint."
The Dahls chose a site where another tavern once stood. In the late 1890s, Garnet resident Mel Stairs opened a saloon and restaurant. He sold to teamster Charlie Davis, who added gas lighting in the shape of slide trombones. Fire destroyed the original saloon, but not the local thirst for taverns.
